Plants of Paradise Meadows
SWI has received a grant from the Coastal Community Dividend Program
for the production of a Native Plant Brochure for Paradise Meadows. The
brochure features 12 dominant plant species and includes brief descriptions
of their features and habitat along with original botanical drawings.
Look for it

The Strathcona Wilderness Institute has been compiling a list of all
birds found in Strathcona Park for many years, and have printed a
handy checklist pamphlet. Over 174 birds are listed. It is available
at the Wilderness Centre and the Buttle Lake Hut (in the summer months),
and some local museums or bookstores for a nominal cost of $2.00. We
can mail you one for $2.50, see the 'Contact Us' page.
Some of the birds listed that are found in the Park are:
• Golden Eagle
• Northern Goshawk
• Barrow's Goldeneye
• Bald Eagle
• Steller's Jay
• Varied Thrush
• Gray Jay (Whiskey Jack)
• Blue Grouse
• Pine Grosbeak
• Three-toed Woodpecker
• Hermit Thrush (nesting)
• Nashville Warbler (spring migrant)
• Rosy Finch (resident)
• White-tailed Ptarmigan, a resident Vancouver Island subspecies
• Red-tailed Tropic bird (whose remains were found by Park Rangers and
identified by birders. It became a Canadian record.
Botany List
Each year, a number of species are added to the Park's ever growing
list of flora and fauna. The plant list stands at over 600 species.
Though the Park is, for the most part, pristine with only native species,
introduced species often turn up in easily-accessed areas due to car,
boat and people traffic. Along the Buttle Lake corridor, several introduced
(non-native) plants can be found such as Scotch broom and Himalayan
blackberry.
Please note that some species are endangered, and the
picking of any
plants or flowers is a poor practice, and illegal. Take a good look,
but leave it for the future. The annoted list is an ongoing project. |
